Memorial Day

Happy Memorial Day

I'm not sure Happy is the right prefix for this holiday but so it goes. First known as "Decoration Day" in honor of those who fell during the American Civil War, it has since grown to encompass all of those brave men and women who have given their lives in the service of their country.

May their souls rest in peace and an enormous "thank you" to their families.

It's a crying shame we have lost touch with what Memorial Day really is about. (Which is why I couldn't bring myself to do a post about it-- too many raw emotions).

I'm working hard teaching my children it's not about the first weekend to kick off the summer. It's not about great sales. It's not about picnics. It's about laying flowers on graves and at memorial sites and remembering exactly how we got to where we are- through the blood of many.

Thanks for such a wonderful post!

I loved this. I heard it last year for the first time. Thanks for posting it. I've should have posted the picture I received of Dad's grave and white marble headstone and the field of white in the National Cemetery. I will post it on the anniversary of his death this year probably.
