I decided to whip up some oatmeal/coconut/date/walnut cookies this afternoon. I had noticed yesterday, when I was looking for something else, that there was a container of oatmeal in the back of the cupboard. I reached up, grabbed it and opened it. It was about a third full of oatmeal and no bugs. Always a good start. I poured out the oatmeal into a measuring cup and found a coupon in the bottom of the box.Notice anything odd about this coupon? Wait, let me reopen my editing junk. Hang on just a couple.
Ok, so my editting skills are not up to this today....that expiration date? Yeah, you read it right. Expires 12/31/90.

Oh, dear. I hope it made it to the trash okay...18 years old? WOW
That is like antique oatmeal!
I have to say that is too good of a story not to tell on yourself!
Wow that's old stuff! Ewwwww....
You should challenge everyone to see what they can find in their cupboards. I'm chuckling because I had a good turn out last and was surprised how old some things were at the back of my cupboards! After all there was a time when we didn't have use by dates!!
hmmm, that might be a record. though doug likes to go through our cupboards and loudly announce the expiration dates of things as he pitches them in the trash. plenty from the '90s.
That stuff is antique!! You didn't eat it did you??
Are you sure there were no bugs? Of course, by now, they'd be dead and have dried out and probably looked a lot like oats! haha Glad you found that coupon before it was too late.
okay, but is it bad? It didn't fall on the floor or anything, and if all else fails, just cook it until the heat kills the germs. All in all, a product that won't go bad. NLM
Does oatmeal expire? Even if it doesn't, I would've had to chuck it (or else I might be up-chucking!!).
Hmmm, just this weekend I made Cowboy Cookies (oatmeal chocolate chip) :). The oats were "new" and the cookies? YUMMMEEEE!
I shudder to think what's lurking in my pantry, lol!
OMG - and you DIDN'T have bugs????
I made myself some oatmeal for breakfast a couple of days ago and when I took it out of the microwave, the mealworms had bubbled up to the top. Dang. That was a fairly new can too. Turns out that there was a hole in the bottom seam. All my food stuff lives in plastic now.
