It is a point of pride with me that it is possible to eat dinner around my dogs without being unnecessarily bothered. Yes, I feed them off the plate but only after we are all done and they wait their turn. Even off of one plate, Duck gets hers first and then Holly and then Buddy.
My dogs are not perfect. Holly, in particular, loves to counter surf, garbage dive, etc. However, if she or either of the other dogs looks at a food item, all I have to do is say, "Not yours". That's the phrase that pays at my house. It works for everything I want them to leave alone.
Buddy just turned 1 on the 16th and, by Jove, I think he's got it!
I feel like a cross between Henry Higgins and Dr. Doolittle. Maybe I'm just Rex Harrison!

Oh boy, I need tips on this one because Lily is starting to be a garbage hound. She is developing some bad habits that I need to put a stop to.
Beckie - don't look at me! While I was posting this Holly ate the butter off of the kitchen counter! Pride goeth before the fall...
Good job, Buddy! Now that is a dog with good table manners! :)
Our dogs don't pester either and it's best to not be bothered while eating. :) Ours too get a little something after everyone's done eating but never during and not from the table.
Good dogs!
ours just stare. they know better than to do any more than that.
but sometimes staring is too much, and we make them go away.
what a cute little furry snout in that picture.
LOl 'at pride.....etc' they always manage to let you down!
If you're Rex Harrison, can I be Audrey? I think I could pull off a cockney accent if necessary. Just call me Eliza.
Gosh! I need you to come help me trian my momma's new dog.
Chloe got a brand new tube of toothpaste yesterday. Unfortunately, no one was home to say, "Not Yours!". At least she has minty fresh breath!
We use "ignore". It works on most distractions except for cats. If we're out walking (off leash) and a strange cat catches Kida's eye, I say "not your cat." And she doesn't even think about chasing it.
