Julie would like to know, this week, about our Thanksgiving meals - what we serve, any traditions, and possibly recipes.
Thanksgiving at my house is NOTHING like Thanksgiving at my mother's. My mother, who worked the graveyard shift, always cooked Thanksgiving dinner. Not just any Thanksgiving dinner but one with a turkey and a ham. My sister didn't like ham. I don't like turkey. The appropriate sides accompanied both entrees and dessert only served to spoil us further. There were always at least 3 options since at least 2 of us refused to eat any one thing.
Fast forward 40 something years. My husband and I drove truck for years and were never home for the holidays. We ate our Thanksgiving and Christmas meals either with friends and family if we happened to be delivering in their neighborhood or at truckstops. I lost the habit of cooking.
Now, I work graveyard shift and my daughter also works shift work. This year she will be working 4 to midnight. Our solution? and our tradition since this is at least the 4th holiday we have done this?
Yep. Everyone gets what they want and the amount that they want. No dishes, no cleanup, just the enjoyment of each other's company and thankfulness that restaurants are open for people like us. If you want the recipes, some of them are available on line.

Man, oh man does that sound tempting! Furr's was pretty good as I recall (we don't have one here but did in Oklahoma). Especially the no clean up part! and the no cooking part. Okay, the whole thing!!!
I dont know what Furr's is, lol. I can see the temptation, though! My mom was ALWAYS really good at serving 2 or 3 vegetables during a meal, in case one of us didn't like something.
We ate out one year for Thanksgiving. We didn't have dessert at the restaurant, had pie at home. I loved not having to put all that time and effort in to cooking, and especially didn't miss the clean up.
We did find one thing we missed though, leftovers.
We do not have a Furrs here, but a restaurant meal is great. I like leftovers, so this would not be an option for me.
Thank goodness the holiday cooks don't feel compelled to cook everything that they know how to make anymore. Much less stressful. And no guilt trips on family members who have different schedules. Sometimes at Christmas I love to just stay home and be quiet. BTW, my best friend was just saying yesterday that she has totally lost her cooking gene!
I wouldn't hesitate to eat at a restaurant if we were all on different schedules. I think I would have to cook a turkey though just so we could have sandwiches for the long weekend. That's what I like the most....the left over turkey for sandwiches!
Sandy! We have been going out for YEARS! I would say we started going out about ten years ago. It is SO much easier and more relaxing!! No fuss / no muss / no CLEANING. I can't cook! My mom always cooked her heart out for every single holiday. Me....I prefer going out!
Very neat - it doesn't matter where you get it, or who makes it as long as you're thankful for the people & blessings in your life :) Enjoy it!
Love that idea ! We don't have a Furr's...but we do have restaurants with varied menu's...
H-m-m-m-m.
Amen to that option! ! ! !
I've never even heard of Furr's. But I
would be all for it.
